Every once in a while, the phone network hands local businesses a genuine opportunity. It happened when toll free 800 numbers first opened up. It happened again when 336 was brand new back in 1997 and the best local numbers were sitting there waiting to be claimed. Right now, that same window is open in the Piedmont Triad with the 743 area code, and most business owners have not noticed yet.
Here is the short version: new 743 phone numbers are available now across Greensboro, Winston-Salem, High Point, Burlington, Kernersville, Asheboro, and the entire region that shares the 336 footprint. Because 743 is still young, the inventory of clean, memorable, easy-to-say business numbers is deep. The kind of number that spells a word. The kind that ends in round zeros. The kind your customers remember after hearing it once on the radio. Those numbers were picked over decades ago in 336. In 743, they are still on the shelf.
If you have been thinking about a new location, a new service line, a dedicated sales or service number, or a fresh brand identity, this is the moment to act. Call our pre-sales team directly on our own new 743 number, (743) 910-8000, and we will help you find a number worth putting on the side of a truck.
A quick refresher: why the Triad has two area codes
The Piedmont Triad has been a 336 region since December 1997, when 336 split off from 910 to serve north-central and northwestern North Carolina. For almost twenty years, one area code was enough. Then growth caught up with us. Between new residents, new businesses, mobile phones, tablets, alarm systems, fleet trackers, and internet-based phone lines, the region simply began running out of numbers. Each area code can supply only about eight million usable combinations, and a growing region burns through them faster than most people realize.
So the North Carolina Utilities Commission approved a second area code, 743, as an overlay covering the exact same territory as 336. Nobody lost a number. Nothing moved. The two codes share the same geography, the same local calling, and the same community.
The one change everyone felt was ten-digit dialing. Starting April 23, 2016, a full decade ago now, every local call in the 336 region had to be dialed with the area code included. A month later, on May 23, 2016, carriers began issuing the first 743 numbers. Ten years on, ten-digit dialing is second nature, overlays exist in every major North Carolina metro, and a 743 number is every bit as local as a 336 number. It just means the line is newer.
We covered the full history of North Carolina area codes, from a single statewide 704 in 1947 to ten codes today, in our earlier post on 336, 743, and what they mean for your business. This post is about what comes next: the opportunity sitting inside 743 right now.
The Triad keeps growing, and growth eats phone numbers
The reason 743 exists at all is the reason it matters to your business: this region is expanding. North Carolina added more than 900,000 residents between 2010 and 2020 and keeps landing at the top of best-states-for-business rankings. Every new household, new storefront, new food truck, new medical practice, and new home services company needs phone numbers, often several of them. Add smart devices, security systems, delivery fleets, and text-enabled business lines, and the demand for thousands upon thousands of new telephone numbers every year is not slowing down.
That demand is exactly why the smart, memorable numbers in 336 are long gone. Carriers assigned the good ones years ago, and businesses hold onto them for decades. In 743, the story is different. The area code is barely ten years old, which means the vanity numbers, the repeating digits, the round-zero endings, and the easy-to-remember patterns are still available. That will not stay true forever. As more Triad businesses open and expand, the best 743 inventory gets claimed one number at a time.
What could your number spell?
Here is where it gets fun. On a phone keypad, every digit from 2 through 9 carries letters, which means a phone number can carry your brand. Think about what a customer remembers after seeing your van at a stoplight for eight seconds.
- A florist could carry (743) 356-9377, which spells FLOWERS.
- A roofing contractor could carry (743) 766-3464, which spells ROOFING.
- A property manager could take a number ending in 7368, which spells RENT.
- A gift shop could take a number ending in 4438, which spells GIFT.
- A medical or dental practice could build around the digits for DOCTOR or SMILE.
Those exact combinations were snapped up in 336 ages ago. In 743, patterns like these are still out there. A vanity phone number is one of the cheapest pieces of permanent advertising a small business can own. It works on radio, on billboards, on vehicle wraps, on yard signs, and in the memory of a customer who did not have a pen handy. And unlike an ad campaign, you pay for it once and it keeps working.
Fresh exchanges, wide open inventory
Within the 743 area code, entire exchanges, the three digits after the area code, are newly opened for the Piedmont Triad. That means huge blocks of numbers to choose from, including patterns like these:
- 743-200-xxxx
- 743-226-xxxx
- 743-227-xxxx
- 743-228-xxxx
- 743-229-xxxx
- 743-230-xxxx
- 743-231-xxxx
- 743-232-xxxx
- 743-234-xxxx
And hundreds more. Want your main line, your fax line, your text line, and a direct number for every employee to share the same exchange so your whole company looks unified? In 336 that is nearly impossible today. In 743, we can often build it. Want sequential numbers for multiple locations, so your Greensboro, High Point, and Winston-Salem offices differ by a single digit? Ask us. The inventory exists right now.
Why get your 743 number from Carolina Digital Phone
Plenty of websites will sell you a phone number. Very few of them are an actual local phone company. Carolina Digital Phone has provided hosted VoIP phone service to businesses, schools, and local governments from our headquarters at 301 S Elm Street in downtown Greensboro since 2000. That is more than 25 years of dial tone in the same community where 743 lives. Our engineers, our support desk, and our leadership all work right here in the Triad, and our platform runs on geo-redundant data centers in Greensboro, the Research Triangle, and Dallas with a 99.99 percent uptime target.
When you get a 743 number from us, you are not just getting ten digits. You are getting a complete cloud phone system for your business:
- Hosted VoIP phone service that runs on your existing internet connection, with no phone closet, no PBX hardware, and no wiring project.
- Business texting so customers can text your 743 number and reach a real person, and your team can reply from a desktop or mobile app.
- An AI receptionist that answers around the clock, routes callers, answers common questions, and books appointments so a call at 9 pm is not a lost customer. Learn more on our AI Agent page.
- Mobile and desktop apps so your new number rings your office phone, your cell phone, and your laptop all at once, and outbound calls show your business number instead of a personal cell.
- Auto attendants, ring groups, voicemail to email, call recording, and video meetings included, not sold as add-ons.
- Local support from people who answer the phone in Greensboro, not a ticket queue overseas.
And if you already have a 336 number that your customers know, nothing changes. Federal number portability rules let us move your existing number onto our platform, and you can add a new 743 number alongside it. Many of our customers run a legacy 336 main line and a new 743 sales or texting line on the same system, with every call and message landing in one place.
Smart ways businesses are using new 743 numbers
Launch a new brand or location
Opening a second location or spinning up a new service line? Give it its own memorable 743 identity from day one instead of inheriting whatever number is left over.
Track your marketing
Put a dedicated 743 number on your billboard, another on your Google Business Profile, and another on your direct mail. When each channel has its own number, you know exactly which advertising actually makes your phone ring.
Separate sales from support
A clean new 743 number for sales, with its own greeting, its own routing, and its own reporting, keeps new business from getting buried behind support calls.
Text-enable your business
More than half of customers would rather text a business than call it. A new 743 number set up for business SMS from day one gives your customers a modern way to reach you, and gives you a paper trail of every conversation.
The window is open. It will not stay open.
Think back to the businesses that grabbed the great 336 numbers in the late 1990s. Many of them are still running those numbers today because a great number is an asset you never give back. The 743 area code is at that same early stage right now. The region keeps growing, thousands of new numbers get assigned every month, and every month the pool of truly memorable combinations gets smaller.
Finding the perfect number takes a human touch, which is why we do not hide behind a web form for this. Call our pre-sales support specialists, tell them what your business does, and let them hunt. Want something that spells a word? Want triple digits? Want a number that matches your existing 336 line? That is a fifteen minute conversation, and it is free.
