Hickory began with a tavern. In the 1850s, at a junction of the Western North Carolina Railroad, Henry Robinson built a log inn beneath a hickory tree. The town was chartered as Hickory Tavern in 1863, shortened to Hickory in 1873, and incorporated as a city in 1889.
When local merchants watched freight trains haul Carolina lumber north to be made into furniture, they decided to keep the work at home. In 1902 the Hickory Manufacturing Company opened, the area's first furniture factory and still operating today on its original site as Hickory White. The families kept building. The Shuford, Moretz, Gifford, and Moore families and dozens of others turned Hickory into a furniture powerhouse, and in 1960 the Lail family created what became the Hickory Furniture Mart, a year-round destination that still draws buyers from every state and around the world.
For generations, the people here ate, slept, and breathed furniture. It is estimated that around sixty percent of all furniture in American homes traces back to North Carolina makers and vendors, many of them in and around Hickory.
