A town built by families

From Tucker's Barn to the Furniture Capital of the South

Lenoir started as a gathering place. Around 1765, a family named Tucker settled on the north side of Lower Creek, and Tucker's Barn became the spot where neighbors voted, mustered, traded, and held their celebrations. When Caldwell County was carved out in 1841, General William Lenoir, a Revolutionary War hero who fought at Kings Mountain and later served as a trustee of the University of North Carolina, joined James Harper and Seth Bradshaw in donating the land for a county seat. The town took the general's name, and his restored 1792 home, Fort Defiance, still stands just outside town.

The railroad reached Lenoir in 1884, and almost overnight a farm town became a furniture town. In 1889, John Mathias Bernhardt founded Bernhardt Furniture, and the same era gave rise to the Lenoir Furniture Company. The families kept coming. In 1926, after a fire destroyed a key supplier, a salesman named James Edgar "J.E." Broyhill mortgaged his house for $5,000 to launch the Lenoir Chair Company. It grew into Broyhill Furniture Industries, which at its peak employed as many as 7,500 people across more than twenty factories.

For a century, fine furniture made in Lenoir graced homes in more than thirty countries. Buyers traveled here from around the world, and furniture executives hosted them in their own homes, with parties that made Lenoir's brand of Southern hospitality famous. With four opera houses and a rich musical life, one newspaper called Lenoir the "Athens of western North Carolina." This was a town where the people who built the businesses also built the community around them.

Neighbors helping neighbors

The character that makes Lenoir, Lenoir

In Lenoir, the line between business and community has always been thin. The families who made the furniture also built the hospitals, the parks, and the institutions that still serve their neighbors today.

5 generations

A family business that stayed

Bernhardt Furniture has been family-owned in Lenoir for more than 135 years and is now the largest family-owned furniture company in the country. It is the single largest supporter of the United Way of Caldwell County, which in turn helps fund more than a dozen local agencies.

The Bernhardt story

Built for the town

Founders who gave back

Thomas Broyhill, J.E.'s brother and partner, helped build Lenoir's first hospital, and the Broyhill family opened the city's municipal golf course. Furniture families helped lay the railroads and fund the parks that neighbors still enjoy.

City history

Volunteer-powered

The largest sculpture event in the South

Each fall, Lenoir hosts the Caldwell County Sculpture Celebration, a community-run competition that has helped fill downtown with the largest collection of permanent public outdoor sculpture per capita in the country.

Caldwell Arts Council

From the Furniture Capital to the cloud

The town that furnished the world now helps store its data

When global competition reshaped American furniture, Lenoir did what it has always done: it adapted. In 2007, Google chose Lenoir for one of its largest data centers, drawn by the power, water, land, and skilled workforce that the furniture era left behind. In 2026, Google announced a new $1 billion investment to grow that campus. Exela Pharma Sciences brought new life to the old Broyhill headquarters, Woodgrain Millwork and Bernhardt keep manufacturing strong, and Caldwell UNC Health Care anchors the community's care.

It is a fitting place for Carolina Digital Phone to do business. The same town that once shipped craftsmanship around the world now helps run the cloud, and your phone system should live there too. Hosted voice means no aging PBX in a closet, no missed calls when the power blinks, and no waiting on a far-off carrier. Just clear calls, smart routing, texting, and an AI receptionist that work from anywhere, backed by a North Carolina team.
